What could possibly be more southern than a welcoming front porch? For generations, the front porch was a little like Facebook. From the 1930s to the 50s, Van Valkenburgh family matrons and friends would gather and sit along the front porch of matriarch Margaret Powell Van Valkenburgh’s home at 108 Gates Avenue, just a block from VV&W’s office.
They’d call out greetings and gather information from people walking by, and they’d call out all the latest news they’d heard. And so everyone stayed informed on the latest news and happenings.
Although we may now have digital front porches, nothing will ever quite match June evenings on a wide porch as the lightning bugs start to flicker, and exchanging a few kind words with neighbors passing by on an evening walk.
To wish you a happy Friday, here are a few images of beautiful front porches from our current listings.
