Energy Saving Tips for the Summer

Do you find that your utility bills start to skyrocket in the warmer months? This Summer in Alabama has been hot, hot, hot, and our air conditioners are working overtime to keep us cool. Here’s some ways to conserve energy to keep costs down:

Efficient use of your thermostat – When you are home, set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature that also provides humidity control. When away, keep your house warmer than normal to save on energy. Avoid setting the temperature too cold when first arriving home—it will not cool the house any faster and result in unnecessary expense.

Use your fans along with the AC – Make use of your electric and ceiling fans by supplementing them with your air conditioning

Keep hot air from leaking in – Seal cracks and openings to prevent warm air from coming into your home. Add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around doors/windows.

Change air filters regularly – Your HVAC system will work harder when the air filter is dirty so it is important to change them out.

Close blinds/curtains during the hottest parts of the day – This will help prevent the suns rays from entering your home.

Turn off unnecessary lights – When not occupying a room, be sure to turn off the lights as they emit heat and cause your air conditioning system to work harder. Cooler lighting options are also available when you switch to LED light bulbs.

Lower your water heating cost – Water heating accounts for almost 20% of the energy consumed in your home. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends setting your water heater at no more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
